On most controllers it is caused by stick wear: inside there are tracks that a contact rubs against, and with use they wear down or get dirty. At home you can check it with an online controller test, rule out a software fault and clean around the stick, but if the part is worn, the drift comes back.

What is controller stick drift?

We talk about stick drift when the controller sends movement without you touching the stick: your character walks on its own, the camera slowly turns or the menu cursor jumps from one option to another. It can happen on one stick or on both, and it often starts mildly: you only notice it in games that react to very small movements.

Why does it happen?

The sticks on most controllers, such as the PS5 DualSense, the PS4 DualShock 4 or Xbox controllers, measure their position with potentiometers: a metal contact that rubs against a resistive track. When the stick is at rest, the controller reads the centre. If that reading changes without you moving the stick, drift appears. The most common causes are:

Wear: constant rubbing wears down the track over hours of play. It is the most common cause and cannot be fixed without replacing the part.

Dirt: dust, debris or grease getting in through the gap around the stick and altering the reading.

Knocks and drops: they can shift the stick or damage its mechanism.

Software or connection faults: less common, and the only ones that can be fixed with a restart or an update.

Magnetic sticks (Hall effect or TMR) read the position without contact, so they do not suffer from this wear; we explain more in whether magnetic sticks get drift.

Stick drift on high-end controllers: DualSense Edge, Xbox Elite Series 2 and TMR sticks

Paying more for a controller does not prevent drift: “pro” controllers can have it too.

DualSense Edge: its sticks are in modules you can replace yourself. If one has drift, the whole module is replaced; Sony sells them separately (they launched at €24.99 in Europe).

Xbox Elite Series 2: its sticks measure position with potentiometers, like those on the standard controller, and cannot be replaced without opening the controller. Adjusting the stick tension does not change the part that wears out. We repair it by fitting Hall effect sticks: see our Xbox controller repair.

TMR sticks: like Hall effect sticks, they read the position with a magnet and a sensor, without contact, so they do not suffer from wear caused by rubbing. The type of sensor changes (tunnel magnetoresistance); manufacturers advertise it as more precise and lower in power consumption, although there is still little independent testing comparing them.

How to tell if your controller has stick drift

Run the controller test. Connect it to your computer or phone and open our online controller test. Release both sticks and press “Measure drift”: for 3 seconds we measure how much they move on their own. Below 0.04 the stick returns to the centre properly; between 0.04 and 0.10 there is slight drift, and above 0.10, it is drift.

Rotate each stick around its edge. In the same test, the trace should draw a full circle. Gaps or a flattened side show that the stick does not reach its full range, another sign of wear.

Try more than one game. If it only happens in one, check its control settings: it could be the sensitivity or a very low deadzone.

What to try at home before getting it repaired

Restart and update the controller. Rule out a software fault. We explain the steps for the DualSense, the DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers in how to calibrate a PS5, PS4 and Xbox controller.

Clean around the stick. With the controller switched off, use short bursts of compressed air around the base of the stick while slowly rotating it. Do not push objects in or put liquids or lubricants inside: they can make the problem worse.

Adjust the in-game deadzone. If the drift is slight, raising the deadzone a little in the control options hides it, at the cost of some precision.

Run the test again. If the resting value returns to close to 0, the problem was a one-off. If it stays above 0.10, it is wear.

If your controller is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, check the conditions before opening it or taking it in for repair.

When home fixes aren’t enough: how stick drift is repaired

A worn stick is fixed by replacing the part. There are two options: replace it with a new stick of the same type, or fit Hall effect sticks, which do not have the wear from rubbing that causes drift.

PS5 controller: see the PS5 controller stick drift repair or the Hall effect sticks for the DualSense.

PS4 controller: the Hall effect stick for the DualShock 4 and the PS4 controller repair.

Xbox controller: the Xbox controller repair with Hall effect sticks, for Xbox Series X|S and Elite Series 2.

You can bring the controller to our workshop in Alcobendas (Madrid) or send it to us, and we will confirm the quote before we start.

Frequently asked questions

Does stick drift fix itself?

If it is caused by a software fault or a bit of dirt, it can disappear after restarting or cleaning the controller. If it is wear, no: it usually gets worse with use.

Does calibrating the controller remove drift?

No. The PS5 and PS4 have no stick calibration, and adjusting the deadzone only hides slight drift. We explain it in how to calibrate a controller.

Do the DualSense Edge or the Xbox Elite Series 2 get stick drift?

They can, just like standard controllers. On the DualSense Edge you replace the stick module; on the Elite Series 2 you need to open the controller and replace the sticks, for example with Hall effect ones.

Why does my character move on its own in one game and not in another?

Each game has its own deadzone. Slight drift shows up in games with a small deadzone and not in those with a larger one.

Can I test the controller without a console?

Yes. Connect it by USB cable or Bluetooth to a computer or phone and open the online controller test. There is nothing to install.

PlayStation, DualSense and DualShock are registered trademarks of Sony Interactive Entertainment; Xbox, of Microsoft Corporation.
