Controller Stick Drift: Why It Happens and What to Try at Home

carlos gomez 5 min read
Short answer Stick drift is when a thumbstick moves on its own even though you are not touching it. On most controllers it is caused by wear inside the stick: it contains tracks that a contact rubs against, and with use they wear down or get dirty. At home you can check it with an online controller test, rule out a software fault and clean around the stick, but if the part is worn out, the drift will come back.

What is controller stick drift?

We talk about stick drift when the controller sends movement without you touching the stick: your character walks by itself, the camera slowly turns or the menu cursor jumps from one option to another. It can happen on one stick or on both, and it often starts mildly: you only notice it in games that react to very small movements.

Why does it happen?

The sticks on most controllers, such as the PS5 DualSense, the PS4 DualShock 4 or Xbox controllers, measure their position with potentiometers: a metal contact that rubs against a resistive track. When the stick is at rest, the controller reads the centre. If that reading changes without you moving the stick, drift appears. The most common causes are:

  • Wear: constant rubbing wears down the track over hours of play. It is the most common cause and cannot be fixed without replacing the part.
  • Dirt: dust, debris or grease that get in through the gap around the stick and alter the reading.
  • Knocks and drops: they can shift the stick or damage its mechanism.
  • Software or connection faults: less common, and the only ones that can be fixed with a restart or an update.

Advanced controllers can suffer from it too: the DualSense Edge has replaceable stick modules, and Sony sells them separately so you can swap them. Hall effect sticks (Hall Effect or TMR) read the position without contact, so they do not have this wear; we explain more in whether Hall effect sticks get drift.

How to tell if your controller has stick drift

  1. Run the controller test. Connect it to your computer or phone and open our online controller test. Let go of both sticks and press “Medir deriva” (measure drift): for 3 seconds we measure how much they move on their own. Below 0.04 the stick returns to the centre properly; between 0.04 and 0.10 there is slight drift, and above 0.10, stick drift.
  2. Rotate each stick around the edge. In the same test, the trace should draw a complete circle. Gaps or a flattened side mean the stick does not reach its full range, another sign of wear.
  3. Try more than one game. If it only happens in one, check its control settings: it could be the sensitivity or a very low deadzone.

What to try at home before repairing it

  1. Restart and update the controller. Rule out a software fault. We explain the steps for the DualSense, the DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers in how to calibrate your PS5, PS4 and Xbox controller.
  2. Clean around the stick. With the controller switched off, use compressed air in short bursts around the base of the stick while you slowly rotate it. Do not push any objects in or put liquids or lubricants inside: they can make the problem worse.
  3. Adjust the in-game deadzone. If the drift is slight, raising the deadzone a little in the control options hides it, at the cost of some precision.
  4. Run the test again. If the resting value goes back close to 0, it was a one-off problem. If it stays above 0.10, it is wear.

If your controller is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, check its conditions before opening it or taking it for repair.

When home fixes aren’t enough: how it’s repaired

A worn stick is fixed by replacing the part. There are two options: replace it with a new stick of the same type or install Hall effect sticks, which do not have the wear from rubbing that causes drift.

You can bring the controller to our workshop in Alcobendas (Madrid) or send it to us, and we will confirm the quote before we start.

Frequently asked questions

Does stick drift fix itself?

If it is caused by a software fault or a bit of dirt, it can disappear after restarting or cleaning the controller. If it is wear, it will not: it usually gets worse with use.

Does calibrating the controller get rid of stick drift?

No. The PS5 and PS4 have no stick calibration, and adjusting the deadzone only hides slight drift. We explain it in how to calibrate your controller.

Why does my character move on its own in one game but not in another?

Every game has its own deadzone. Slight drift is noticeable in games with a small deadzone and not in those with a larger one.

Can I test the controller without a console?

Yes. Connect it by USB cable or Bluetooth to your computer or phone and open the online controller test. There is nothing to install.
